Description | The Kaukauna walk is an all new seasonal event on paved trails and through historic neighborhoods along the Fox River, an historic water "super highway" for native tribes, explorers, and fur traders. Both the 6K and 10K feature a long trestle trail over the Fox River and a high pedestrian bridge with a spectacular overhead view of a navigation canal and lock. The 10K also features the historic Grignon Mansion built in 1837 and a paved trail along a mile-long navigation canal with five locks, part of the Fox River Navigational System. Originally built in the 1850's, the system is a series of canals with 17 locks allowing boats to navigate the north flowing Fox River as it drops 170 feet, the height of Niagara Falls, over 30 miles between Lake Winnebago and the waters of Green Bay. It is the only fully restored hand-operated lock system in the United States. |
