| Description: |
Walk highlights Madison's
involvement in the Civil War. It includes Camp Randall and Forest Hill Cemetery.
Camp Randall was a Civil War military training camp through which some 70,000
Wisconsinites and nearly 4,000 Confederate prisoners of war would pass. Forest
Hill Cemetery contains two Civil War plots. The Confederate Rest (a Designated
National Cemetery) is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United
States.
The walk includes a trip through Hoyt Park, a part of the University of
Wisconsin and University Heights, an architecturally and historically important
area of Madison. Walk also passes the home where Aldo Leopold lived.
Walk is primarily on city
sidewalks. The segment through Hoyt Park is mostly on dirt trails. Includes
steps and some moderate hills. A portion of the route is on an abandoned rail
bed. Route directions include brief descriptions of historical buildings and
sites. |
